The idea of My Fair Label was born from a desire to create stable livelihood opportunities for women artisans and producers in Burkina Faso working within the fashion market. This sector is largely informal and these trades (sewing, weaving and dyeing) predominantly female. Typically, the workers involved are paid very low-wages, provided little to no health care, no opportunity to further their education, and often work long hours under difficult conditions.

As an advocate of fair trade and ethical fashion, I saw an opportunity to put my entrepreneurial skills to the task by developing a brand focused on showcasing women’s skills and artisanal creativity while providing them with fair wages for their work. I began designing collections of clothing using fabrics sourced from Burkina Faso, the Ivory Coast, Mali, Benin and Mauritania. Together with a group of women, we began testing the use of plant based dyes on organic fabrics, as well as block printing and Bogolan designs on hand-woven fabrics. Each clothing item in My Fair Label’s shop is sewn by a women's cooperative in Burkina Faso, also committed to the basic ethical principles upon which My Fair Label was founded: Pay fairly, mentor, build capacity, employ long term, build a future.

My Fair Label is now an ethical fashion brand committed to creating unique collections of clothing and accessories made from locally sourced materials. Every item is handmade, ethically produced, and environmentally sound. Each purchase contributes to the economic and social empowerment of our producer partners.
